A French "Japonisme" bronze and cloisonné enamel mantel clock surmounted by a rooster, 19th Century
51 x 20 x 26 cm
800 - 900 €

Attributed to L'Escalier de Cristal, Paris

The term “Japonisme” defines the influence exerted by the Japanese culture on Occidental art, mainly in France, during the second half of 19th Century following the opening of the country and the end of its isolationist foreign policy. This trend gave rise to later art mouvments as Art Nouveau and Impressionism. Within Decorative Arts, techniques as the cloisonné enamel or the oriental imagery revived strongly.
