FELIPE CARDANO (1778 - 1824)
"4ª View of the castle of Valençay"
Engraving
53 x 67 cm
200 - 250 €

This print belongs to a group of several views of the same building: the palace of Valençay, in France. In 1803, the French politician and diplomat Talleyrand acquired this castle by order of Napoleon to receive European dignitaries. King Ferdinand VII of Spain was held in this place by order of the French Emperor, along with his brother Carlos María Isidro and his uncle Antonio. They lived in this palace from May 1808 until the end of the War of Independence, in 1814. In 1813, the Treaty of Valençay was signed in this castle, a treaty by which Napoleon I recognized Ferdinand VII as king of Spain after the defeats, and the wear and tear of the French army in the attempt to invade Spanish territory
